Discover the cultures and traditions of Marrakech

Culture in Marrakech, like any culture in the world, undeniably plays an important role in the life of the city and its inhabitants. Marrakech's culture is rich and diverse, with its historical influences reflected in its beautiful architecture, delicious cuisine and extraordinarily welcoming locals.
The culture of the "red city" is unique and has been strongly influenced by Arab and Islamic civilisations. Marrakech's culture is reflected in its language, religion, music, crafts and traditions.

The languages

The Berbers remain the largest ethnic group in the whole of Morocco. In Marrakech, the main language spoken is Arabic, although the Berber language remains significant because it is still spoken in the country. French is taught in schools from an early age. It has become the country's second non-official language. English is only understood in tourist areas. Most people in Marrakech can speak around 3-4 languages, so there should be no problem understanding when you visit this incredible city. All the staff in our villas speak French and most can understand English so you can agree on the food and service in the villa.

Music

Music in Marrakech has been influenced by a number of different cultures due to its geographical location. The music is a unique blend of Spanish, Middle Eastern, Sub-Saharan and indigenous Amazigh. This unique mosaic of music has been the result of an exciting history. During Marrakech's early years, Gnawa music, Andalusian music, and Sephardic music had a significant impact on the city's culture.
When Europeans started coming to Marrakech, they brought with them new styles that eventually created a rather rare sound.

You can experience this unique blend at music events, concerts and cultural festivals around the city. Our Marrakech-based concierge can even organise private events with musicians and gnaoua at the villa, with a belly dancer putting on a fantastic show during a traditional dinner.

Crafts

In the city of Marrakech, there are a number of different craft trades that have become a veritable tradition over the centuries, handed down from generation to generation. One of the most important craft skills is the magnificent art of Tazoukt. This is a creative form of woodwork where wooden objects such as furniture, boxes and panels are painted with intricate and sophisticated patterns. The designs are done in red to symbolise the city of Marrakech. You can discover many other craft skills on a visit to the souks, as you pass through the surprising and exceptional markets.

Tradition

For a real Marrakech experience, a visit to the souks of the Medina is a must and will immerse you in a cultural whirlwind. Stroll through the narrow streets and admire the objects on display at each of the unique stalls.
This is where the locals go every day to buy what they need for their meals. Talk to the stall-owners and find out about their daily lives in the "red city". Mint tea is also a tradition throughout Morocco and you must try it when you are there - a good cup of tea is served with plenty of bubbles.
